10 things you might not know about Twinkl’s SEND support

with Hannah Lawrence, SEND segment manager, Twinkl

If you haven’t come across Twinkl yet… where have you been? With thousands of resources for learning from Early Years upwards, Twinkl is packed full of activities that are fun, educational, and especially useful for parents whose children are being educated at home.

There are paid subscription tiers, but there are also lots of resources that are free to access that, I (Tania) have found very useful for keeping my two preschool grandsons busy on rainy days, particularly the Paw Patrol and other character print-outs that make learning lots of fun. Twinkl very generously donated 10 Twinkl Ultimate subscriptions for our Christmas giveaway, so we’re saying thank you by telling you more about their SEND offering.

Even better, Twinkl has dedicated resources for children with SEND. Today, we’re delighted to host Hannah Lawrence, Twinkl’s SEND segment manager, who is here to tell us about ten things you might not know about SEND support on Twinkl…

Twinkl is packed with SEND resources for you to check out! by Hannah Lawrence, Twinkl

“This is fantastic, I’d no idea Twinkl had this!” is a sentence I often hear. With over a million resources to choose from, as well as countless other services to support our members, there are plenty of hidden gems to be found—many of them free—when you step inside the world of Twinkl.

My name is Hannah Lawrence, and I manage the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) team at Twinkl. Special Needs Jungle have kindly offered me the opportunity to share the SEND support that Twinkl offers, so I’ve picked out 10 things you might not know about Twinkl that I think will be most useful if you parent or teach children or young people with SEND.

1. Hundreds of thousands of resources for parents

Whether you're looking for ideas for fun games to develop your child’s communication skills, need a step-by-step breakdown of the EHCP application process, or guidance on how to support your child during meltdowns or shutdowns, our SEND parent guidance page is the place to go. Here you’ll also find resources created in partnership with charities and organisations such as Down Syndrome UK, The Sleep Charity and Long Covid Kids—and our partnership resources are always free.

As well as specialist SEND content, explore our partnerships page for more free resources featuring your children’s favourite characters - including Peppa Pig, Paw Patrol, Spiderman, Sonic and many more!

2. Specialist SEND, SaLT and OT Resources

Our Inclusion team of specialist SEND teachers, Speech and Language Therapists (SaLT) and Occupational Therapists (OT) use their expertise to create thousands of learning resources and information documents designed especially for learners who are neurodivergent, disabled, or have other additional needs, as well as their teachers and parents. Here you’ll find resources to support the curriculum, specialist strategies such as colourful semantics, sensory stories, areas of regulation and social situations, and ideas and resources to support sensory diets, fine motor skill development, and attention skills. Visit the Inclusion homepage to explore the full collection, or jump straight to our SEND, SaLT or OT pages to find what you need.

3. Resources for Older Learners Too!

Twinkl is well known for its primary resources - but did you know that we have resources for learners of secondary school age and above too? For young people who are following the secondary curriculum, Twinkl Beyond offers learning resources for key stages 3,4 and 5, including GCSE revision tools. For those who are secondary age and accessing the primary curriculum, or a specialist curriculum, visit our SEND Older Learners page to find resources to support learning, communication, social, emotional and mental health needs, and physical and sensory needs, as well as life skills resources to support the development of independence and preparation for adulthood.

4. Communication Resources with Twinkl Symbols

For many children and young people, symbols are a key communication tool. Our easy-to-use Symbols app allows you to quickly create choice mats, now and next boards, visual timetables and more. You can also upload photographs instead of symbols to suit the needs of your child or young person. The app is currently completely free - download on the App Store or Google Play for your phone or tablet, or use the online tool on your desktop. And, explore our Symbols resources page to find hundreds of ready-made resources - from AAC mats for a range of topics and scenarios, to activities, recipes and craft instructions, as well as tools to support emotional regulation.

5. Make Requests and Edits

We know that no one size fits all, and a resource that works perfectly for one child may not be quite right for another. That's why we make it as easy as we can for resources to be edited, and for new ones to be made. Under most Twinkl resources you’ll see a ‘more downloads’ button - here you’ll find different versions of the resource to suit a range of needs, and a fully editable version. Don’t see the version you want? Just click ‘request’, tell us what you need, and we’ll do our best to make it for you. And, if you need a completely new resource, you can request that too!

6. Learning Apps for Phones and Tablets

As well as Twinkl Symbols, we have many more apps to make learning fun. Read or listen to stories with Twinkl Originals, enter the galaxy’s first extreme sports spelling championship on our space themed Spelling app, practise reading using phonics with Rhino Readers, race against the clock to find the right answers on our Mental Maths app, learn to code with the Little Red Coding Club, and play fine motor skills and simple shape, letter and pattern games when you visit Monster Island. Explore our full app collection here.

7. SEND in the Experts Podcast

Our ‘SEND in the experts’ podcast is a great way to get information, ideas and advice from specialists from across the world of SEND. Hosted by Georgina Durrant, author of ‘100 Ways Your Child Can Learn Through Play’ and ‘SEND Strategies for the Primary Years’, the podcast welcomes guests with expertise and lived experiences to discuss how we can best meet the needs of children and young people with SEND. Find it on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube, or any other podcast provider.

8. Twinkl Digest for Education News
