Netbuddy Says...: Promoting good mental health for people with learning disabilities
The Judith Trust works to promote best practice and improve the quality of life of people who have both learning disabilities and mental health problems. Together, Netbuddy and The Judith Trust have launched an Info Pack on mental health and people with learning disabilities, and we would love to hear more of your tips so we can continue to develop this resource.- This is next week - so still time to mark the week!
Recovery from school refusal | Aspie in the family
I'm not sure if there is such a thing as recovery from school refusal but for us we've got to a point where my son is now spending nearly 4 whole days in school. It's a remarkable achievement because this time last year my son was struggling to leave the house, travel very far or engage with anyone outside the family.- Congrats to Debs at Aspie in the Family...
How students with Asperger's cope at university
What's the stereotype most people have of students? We're seen as boisterous party animals - socialising, drinking and flirting at every opportunity. Our degrees come second to the buzzing social scene that accompanies our first experience of freedom. But that's not the case for students with Asperger's syndrome.- An interesting first hand account.
- Since starting in May 2011 with a grant from the Big Lottery Fund we have: - been contacted by over 700 families, more make contact each day.
- Congrats to Renata and Swan UK on their first birthday
Mum of 4, wife of 1, our lovely biggest boy has Asperger Syndrome: Three wishes are coming true
There are lots of good things happening at the moment, and lots of things to look forward to. I was reminded earlier today of this post I wrote at the start of the year, about my three wishes for the twelve months ahead. J has now done two full weeks of full time school.- A lovely post from Susan
Why DSM-5 Concerns European Psychiatrists
Last September, in a post called " Anti- DSM Sentiment Rises in France," I reported on the arguments and concerns of Stop DSM, a group based in Paris comprising (among others) prominent psychiatrists and psychoanalysts disturbed by the power of the American Psychiatric Association and its "one-track" focus on biological psychiatry.- Get ready to expunge the word Asperger's from your vocab! I'm off to a workshop on Monday with Tony Attwood & Carole Gray and I'll be asking him about DSM V categorisation - will he need to change his book title?
Developmental disorders should be viewed as continuum -
Scientists generally agree that there are 500 to 1,000 rare genetic mutations - either single genes or copy number variants (CNVs) - that can cause 'autisms.' In the search for autism's causes, identifying these individual triggers is the order of the day.- A very interesting article, not to be missed.
